Green Day

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

I love this weather! Everything is warm and sunny, just in time for Earth Day last weekend.

To celebrate the holiday, Ben and I tried to spend as much time outside as possible. Saturday night, we went for a drink and a bite before a late night sing-along screening of Buffy the Musical. We decided on Caffe Reggio in the West Village. A nice tiny spot with outdoor seating that makes for good people watching. The cappuccinos and chocolate mousse were very tasty. Although the bathroom left a bit to be desired! The caffeine and sugar gave us the needed boost to fully participate in the midnight Buffy showing.

On Sunday, we went up to Central Park. We took the train to 86th and made our way through the park, seeing all my favorite sites along the way: Belvedere Castle, The Shakespeare Gardens, the Angel Fountain. Walked all the way through to 59th and 5th, where we can catch our train.

A truly great way to celebrate Earth Day!

Springtime in the Park

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

At first, the warm weather disturbed me. I believe seasons should behave accordingly, and there should be snow now. But I have to admit, I stepped outside yesterday and I got that happy springtime feeling.

Ben and I decided to take advantage of the lovely unseasonal weather by going to Central Park. I love it there. The trees, the water, the…flowers? Yes, we saw flowers. In January. Very strange. We also saw stems, starting to pop out of the ground, possibly confused into premature growth.

We strolled around the pond and watched ducks frolicking in the water. A lovely spring day.

The only indication of the winter season, was the Central Park skating rink, still full of skaters. In the middle of a city in spring bloom.

Lunch at Battery Park

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

As previously mentioned, I work in the Financial District and am not a big fan of the area. But I do have a favorite lunch place: Battery Park.

I had never actually visited Battery Park before. Now, everyday that the weather coorporates, my work friends and I grab a lunch at some local deli like Cafe Exchange or Bento Nouveau, and take it to the park. There’s an area with tables, overlooking the water with a view of the Statue of Liberty (and the Circle Line). It’s not
usually crowded, since most Wall Street types lunch at their desks.

Here flowers bloom, butterflies flutter, and the waves lap. It’s a very peaceful way to spend the midday. There’s also a huge, walk-in fountain which goes off seemingly randomly. My friend recently ran across the spurts of water in front of cheering crowd of tourists and a few fellow unconventional, young professionals, also there to escape for a peaceful lunch.
